Keeping your dog's nails trimmed to the proper length allows the foot to rotate properly.  By assuring that your dog has a good experience with each nail clipping, you will ensure a life time of willing compliance.  Trimming the nails once a week allows you to take just a bit off each nail and reliably avoid cutting the quick.
